There are several myths spun around baby names. These are very hard to separate from reality. An interesting example is that of the belief system about the power of names. It is the belief that the very sound of a name evokes a reaction in the listener. Thus our names become, over a period of time a part of ourselves. Even others say, that the meaning of a name, contributes a few of its properties to the person who is given the name. For example, a parent could name his/her child Gabriel, hoping that the child be angelic, or even that she writes well (if not a famous writer like her namesake Gabriel Garcia Marquez). Some say that a Mother best name the child, because she is the parent with whom the child is in touch first (in the womb) and she can better identify the properties of a suitable name. Even those who aren’t pious, for the sole reason of the strong connotation that these names hold, name babies according to those mentioned in various Holy Texts. So how important really, is a name..?

It is undeniable that a name is something the baby will come to identify for the rest of his/her life. The meanings of baby names are important, to a large degree.

Whether or not it shapes a person’s character, is debatable. But it becomes an intrinsic part of the individual.
